The system of sacrifices among the ancient Hebrews is one of the more perplexing aspects of the Old Testament and Jewish Law. As with the purity regulations, the ancient Hebrew legalists took religious metaphors from surrounding cultic systems and repurposed them into something totally unique that reflected both Israel’s monotheism, and radical new assumptions about the roles played by the priesthood and the laity.
